Expert opinion - Sensitive? Intolerant? Understand how your skin reacts to the sun

How to differentiate between sensitive and sun intolerant skin?

Sensitive skin reacts immediately to various environmental factors such as wind, cold, sun, but also stress and diet.

Symptoms can include redness, tightness, and heating sensations in the areas exposed to the sun.

Intolerant skin is hyper-reactive to UV radiation and often suffers from what dermatologists call benign summer light eruption.

Symptoms can include intense itching and tingling as well as small pimples on the décolleté, arms, legs and sometimes the back of the feet, sparing the face.

It lasts for about a week, and then gradually disappears – as long as there is no further exposure – without leaving any scars. Benign summer light eruptions tend to recur in the following years, becoming more severe.

Why is my skin sensitive or intolerant to the sun?

Sensitive skin is often fair or very fair, burns easily, doesn’t tan much, and struggles to protect itself from the sun because its melanin production is especially limited.

Intolerant skin is hyper-reactive to the sun (especially in case of benign summer light eruptions). This condition mainly affects light skins, but also skins that have not been exposed to the sun for a long time.

These two skin types are more fragile and require sun care adapted to their degree of sensitivity:

For sensitive skins, the Adaptasun Sensitive Body Lotion and Adaptasun Sensitive Protective Face Care offer reinforced protection against UV radiation.

For intolerant skins, the Sun Intolerance Protective Body Spray and Sun Intolerance Face Cream are designed to boost the resistance to UV exposure. These sun care products allow just the right amount of sun to pass through, improve natural defenses, stimulate the skin’s capacity for adaptation and limit intolerance reactions.

Can I go out in the sun if I have sun intolerance? What are the steps to take?

Absolutely. Sun-intolerant skin can be exposed to the sun, as long as you scrupulously adapt your protection routine.

The Sun Intolerance Protective Body Spray is used before and during exposure:

2 weeks before the 1st exposure: apply the Sun Intolerance Protective Body Spray once a day on key areas (décolleté, arms and legs).

Apply the Sun Intolerance Protective Body Spray 20 minutes before every exposure to the sun, and then renew every hour. This helps increase the skin’s tolerance threshold, reduce its reactivity to the sun, stimulate its natural photoprotection, and prevent photo-aging.

What about sensitive skin? How can I get a nice tan?

The skin – even sensitive skin – naturally protects itself from UV radiation by producing melanin, the pigment responsible for tanning. Melanin is a solar filter naturally produced by the skin because it has anti-free radical properties, absorbs UV radiation and protects the DNA. So in fact, tanning is the most natural form of protection there is!

To prepare your skin, spray Bronz Impulse 2 weeks prior to sun exposure, both in the morning and evening, in order to:
- Prepare the skin for tanning by activating the pigmentation process
- Stimulate the natural production of melanin
- Prolong natural tanning
- Protect the skin against UVA-induced photo-aging

Then, before and every hour during exposure, apply the Adaptasun Sensitive Body Lotion***.

It provides excellent protection against UV radiation and stimulates the natural defenses of sensitive skin to make it more resistant to the sun. And the resulting tan is stunning: natural, radiant and long lasting, while preserving the skin’s youthfulness.

What product should I use if my skin has marks or scars?

Scarred skin must be protected from the sun for the first 6 months to prevent hyperpigmentation.

Indeed for at least 6 months – sometimes longer – scarred skin does not play its protective role and the sun’s impact can be much greater than on normal skin that is thick enough to offer optimal defense.

Before each exposure to the sun, and then every 2 hours, apply the No Sun 100% Mineral Screen Protective Care, which protects the skin - even the most sensitive - by optimizing its resistance under all sunlight intensities whilst preserving its youthful appearance.
